The Italian was linked with a move to United earlier this year but ended up joining Marseille instead. However, according to, the former Brighton head coach used a projector to show his Marseille players a copy of the contract he had been offered by the Red Devils. The 45-year-old allegedly said he put "passion before money" to come to the French giants.

United ultimately stuck with Ten Hag and extended his contract until 2026, before firing him in late October. Now, Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim will succeed him at Old Trafford, with the Portuguese facing a daunting task at the struggling Premier League giants.

De Zerbi admitted on Friday that he was "ready to leave" Marseille after their poor 3-1 home loss to Auxerre. He told reporters after the defeat: "I have to take responsibility for this home defeat. We have difficulties at home, thatās clear. I donāt know if itās a lack of courage or personality. I came here to play at the Velodrome because I wanted to live the experience. If the problem is me, Iām ready to leave. Iām leaving without the money, I donāt care about the rest. I donāt want to make excuses and talk nonsense. Iām not going to escape, we have to face reality. Thatās what I have to do."
